Advertising cannot carry an inconsistent offer
The marketing mix is a useful check when a campaign attracts interest but the experience fails to justify it. A premium message sits awkwardly beside unreliable delivery. A low-price promise can collapse under hidden charges. A services company can look welcoming online and leave enquiries unanswered. The 4Ps and 7Ps bring these decisions into one conversation so that communication matches what the buyer actually receives.
Understand the four Ps before adding more
Product, price, place and promotion describe the familiar 4Ps. The expanded 7Ps include people, process and physical evidence, which help examine the delivered experience, particularly in services.1 These are decision categories, not seven independent campaigns. A change in one can affect the others. A new distribution channel may alter pricing, product presentation and the service process.
Use the model to expose contradictions. Ask what the product does for the intended buyer, what the buyer pays in money and effort, where purchase is possible and how the offer is explained. Then examine the people who deliver it, the process the buyer encounters and the evidence that makes the promise believable. A completed list matters less than the awkward questions it raises. Our guide to STP marketing covers the next question.
Product and price need commercial evidence
Product decisions should begin with the job and the circumstances of use. Check performance, suitability, reliability and the support required. A feature list tells you what is present; customer research helps explain which features matter. For a technical product, the buying decision may depend on documentation, compatibility and validation as much as the headline specification.
Price includes the structure of the offer. A buyer may compare a one-time purchase with a subscription, a bundled package with an unbundled service, or a cheap unit with costly maintenance. Measure realised prices, contribution and discount dependence using consistent definitions. Margin calculations should reflect relevant costs and returns. A high order value can conceal poor economics when fulfilment or support becomes expensive.
Place includes the ability to complete a purchase

Availability is broader than having a website. Buyers need suitable channels, stock, understandable purchase conditions and a workable next step. A distributor may carry the product but lack the information needed to recommend it. An ecommerce page may be visible yet fail to serve the buyer’s postcode. A services business may invite enquiries without explaining geography or engagement boundaries.
For the marketing mix, place metrics should reflect the actual buying route. Retail businesses may examine numeric and weighted distribution, stock availability and rate of sale. A B2B supplier may examine partner coverage, qualified enquiries and order fulfilment. A digital business may examine purchase completion and service eligibility. State the market and period rather than treating availability as a vague national claim. If that is your next question, read our guide to physical availability.
People process and evidence shape confidence
People includes the teams and partners whose behaviour affects the customer experience. Process includes handovers, approvals, ordering, service and complaint handling. Physical evidence can include a real product demonstration, an accurately documented process, packaging, a service environment or other tangible cues. Evidence must be genuine. A fictional example belongs in an explicitly labelled example, not in a client-results panel.
Choose measures that reveal where confidence is lost. Track response time with a stated clock, process completion, unresolved issues and customer comprehension. Pair speed with quality. A fast response that asks the buyer to repeat information may still be poor service. Customer satisfaction research should specify the interaction being assessed and who answered, rather than converting a few enthusiastic replies into a general claim.
Find the contradiction in your offer
Share the offer, purchase route and recurring customer friction. We can discuss which communication changes are useful and which operational decisions need to be addressed alongside them.
Build a joined up review
Bring the commercial and operational owners into the mix review. Marketing can identify contradictions, but the decisions may belong to product, finance, sales or service. Assign one accountable owner to each proposed change and record dependencies before changing public promises.
- Product measures can include task success, validated suitability, complaint rates and returns, with a denominator and period appropriate to the product.
- Price measures can include realised price, discount dependence and contribution after agreed costs. State whether taxes, refunds and fulfilment costs are included.
- Place measures should examine actual access to purchase. State channel, geography and availability window rather than reporting distribution as an unqualified total.
- People and process measures can include valid-response time, successful handovers and resolution quality. Speed should be read alongside completeness and customer effort.
- Promotion measures should distinguish media delivery, relevant response and additional commercial outcomes. Use an appropriate experiment when the decision requires causal evidence.

Avoid seven disconnected dashboards

A practical scorecard should connect decisions to the main business outcome. A company seeking profitable repeat purchase might track contribution, repeat purchase within an appropriate window, product complaints and stock availability. The promotional report then explains delivery and response within that wider context. Seven categories do not require seven equally weighted KPIs.
Review changes as a system. A price promotion may increase response and affect margin, capacity or repeat behaviour. A new service process may raise completion but require more staff time. An attractive packaging change may add costs or damage protection in transit. Document these trade-offs. The mix is useful because the buyer experiences the offer as a whole, even when the company manages its parts in separate departments. Brand pricing power is explained in a separate guide.
Questions people ask
Are the 7Ps only for services?
They are especially useful for services, but people, processes and tangible evidence can also matter to product businesses. Use the categories that clarify the delivered experience rather than treating the model as a compliance checklist.
Is promotion the same as marketing?
Promotion is one part of the mix. Product suitability, pricing and availability can explain disappointing sales even when communication is well executed. Examine the wider offer before assigning every problem to creative work.
How do we calculate a marketing mix score?
There is no universal score. If you use an internal scoring exercise, label its weights and judgement rules as your own. Track defined outcomes and diagnostics rather than claiming the model supplies a standard performance number.
Discuss the work your team needs next
Before increasing promotion, ask whether the offer, purchase route and delivered experience support the message. Bring that question to Quiamo with your current service or product page and the friction buyers report. A marketing mix review can connect founder-led strategy to the content and design work required, while identifying the operational decisions that belong with your team. Begin with the contradiction customers encounter most often. Explore our brand strategy engagement to discuss the scope and deliverables.
