The question this article answers
More people are searching your brand name. That is encouraging until you discover that they are looking for a product recall, a careers page or a discount code. Share of search adds a competitive denominator to branded search activity, but it still needs interpretation. The value lies in a repeatable signal about attention or demand in a defined category, not in relabelling every search as a future sale.
Specify what people are searching for
Build a brand-query list for the competitive set. Include sensible spelling variations and common brand-name forms. Separate unrelated meanings, parent-company names and queries with different intent where the data permits. A common dictionary word can contaminate a brand estimate much more than an unusual name.
Use the same source and procedure for every brand. Search Console describes activity associated with your property; it does not directly supply the equivalent whole-market data for competitors. Google Trends gives relative indices with sampling and scaling behaviour, not a simple export of exact search counts. A metric needs to respect the source it actually uses. Check the memory question separately in our guide to brand salience.
Keep the competitor set stable

If two new competitors are added to the denominator, your share can fall while your own search interest stays unchanged. Conversely, dropping a competitor can create an apparent gain. Retain the core set for comparisons and mark any revision. A relevant emerging competitor can be added in a separate diagnostic before the historical series is rebuilt.
Define geography, search type and time interval. Web search in India and video search globally are different signals. Weekly readings may react strongly to news or seasonality. A rolling average can make a trend easier to inspect, but it should not hide the underlying events that produced it. Keep both the raw series and the smoothing method accessible. Compare this search signal with the spending context in share of voice.
Demand is one explanation among several
Search can follow advertising, distribution, press coverage, a service problem or an existing customer looking for support. Examine query intent and context before assigning a meaning. A spike around recruitment may matter for employer branding without indicating additional product demand.
Share of search has been explored by the IPA as a practical competitive signal.1 Its usefulness depends on category and method. We recommend checking whether the series has a meaningful relationship with independent commercial data in your own market. Even a strong historical correlation does not mean search caused the sales, or that every future movement will carry the same implication. Review SEO measurement when the question concerns relevant organic traffic and enquiries.
Use a signal to prompt investigation

A sustained shift can trigger a review of campaign activity, product launches and market access. Compare changes in the brand’s own search series with the category total. Losing share because competitors are growing is different from losing share because your absolute interest is falling.
For share of search, the next question should be operationally useful. Did a new product create relevant enquiries? Did publicity reach people who could buy? Is interest concentrated in markets the business can serve? Those investigations connect a low-cost signal to practical communication decisions without pretending it measures the whole market’s memory.
Keep an event register beside the series
Create a dated record of events that could change search behaviour. Include product launches, paid campaigns, recruitment, news coverage, service interruptions and important competitor activity. Record observed facts rather than adding a preferred explanation after seeing a spike. This gives the review team context while preserving the distinction between context and causation.
Where query information permits, inspect the kinds of searches involved. A surge in support queries may concern existing customers. A rise in brand-plus-product queries may have different relevance. Document the classification method and ambiguous cases rather than forcing every query into purchase intent. The result should remain reproducible by somebody else.
Compare the signal with enquiry quality, not just enquiry count. If search interest rises and the website receives many unsuitable requests, the communication may be reaching the wrong audience or describing the offer too broadly. If relevant enquiries rise but sales stall, examine the response process and buying conditions. Search data can point toward those investigations without answering them alone.
Keep quiet periods in the analysis. A presentation built only from dramatic spikes can exaggerate a signal’s usefulness. Review whether the method provides interpretable information during ordinary trading, and whether it remains stable when terms have low interest. A repeatable modest signal is often more useful than a compelling chart of one exceptional week.

Worked example using fictional numbers
Illustrative example only: a common count-based data source records 12,000 searches for fictional brand Luma and 60,000 searches across the declared four-brand set in one month. Its SoS is 20%. The next month Luma records 15,000 searches but the total rises to 100,000, leaving 15% share. Interest in Luma increased while its competitive share fell. A product launch explains some of the category growth; a recruitment campaign explains part of Luma’s increase. The figures are teaching numbers, not actual search-volume research or a sales forecast.
Putting the evidence to work
Create a query register and a repeatable extraction procedure. Review ambiguous names manually. Annotate campaigns, news events, launches and major source changes. Set a sensible review cadence and retain enough history to distinguish a short spike from a persistent shift.\ \ Quiamo can incorporate this signal into a wider communication and measurement review. The output should explain the defined category, observed movement, competing explanations and follow-up questions. If search interest looks commercially relevant, connect it with landing-page clarity, qualified enquiries and market availability. Those additional checks make the signal actionable without inflating its authority. Explore how Quiamo approaches brand strategy and communication before defining the scope.
Questions people ask
Is Google Trends search volume?
It reports normalized relative search interest, not exact counts of searches. The comparison settings and scaling matter. Treat an index-based share as an estimate from that method, and avoid mixing separately scaled exports as if they were comparable counts. Keep the calculation reproducible and explain its limitations beside the chart.
Will share of search predict our market share?
It may be informative in some categories, but test the relationship against suitable independent data. Buying cycles, query meanings and market access vary. A historical association is not a universal forecasting guarantee. A forecast also needs uncertainty and a method that can be tested on data not used to fit it.
Should negative publicity be excluded?
Do not hide it. Separate query intent or annotate the event where possible, then explain what the total includes. A total search-interest measure can rise for harmful reasons. Reporting a second purchase-oriented series may help, provided the classification is transparent and consistently applied across brands.
Where to go next
Use share of search as a signal you can investigate. Bring Quiamo the brand-query set, competitors and business question behind the chart. We can help connect the observed trend with communication, website and enquiry evidence, while keeping the limitations clear enough for a sensible decision. Contact Quiamo to discuss the brief.
