Advertising ROI, ROAS and ROMI: Which Number Are You Reporting?

Define revenue, margins, campaign costs and causal evidence before using ROI, ROAS or ROMI to make an investment decision.

Name the return before quoting the ratio

A campaign reports a return of five to one. Finance asks whether that means revenue, gross profit or profit after marketing costs. The answer changes the investment decision. ROI vs ROAS is a discussion about definitions before it is a discussion about performance. ROAS usually divides reported advertising revenue by advertising spend. ROI concerns return relative to investment costs, and ROMI is used for marketing investment with varying conventions. Write the formula your report uses. A familiar acronym is not enough when two teams put different costs and outcomes into the same ratio. For a wider view of the options, explore our marketing frameworks and measurement guide.

ROAS keeps a narrow denominator

Revenue divided by advertising spend can help monitor a campaign under stated attribution rules. It does not deduct product costs, delivery, returns or agency fees unless the measure has been explicitly redefined. Google’s ROI guidance distinguishes revenue and costs in investment assessment. 1 A high ROAS can still leave little contribution for the business. State whether revenue is gross or net, whether taxes and cancellations are excluded and which conversion-credit window applies. Compare like with like. One channel’s reported ROAS may use a different window or attribution method from another channel’s report.

ROMI needs a declared cost basis

A useful stated convention is marketing investment return equals incremental contribution before marketing costs, minus the relevant marketing investment, divided by that investment. Other conventions exist, so label the one used. Include the scope: media only, campaign production plus media, or a broader marketing programme. If the numerator is attributed rather than incremental contribution, say that the report is an attributed estimate. The calculation cannot create a causal claim that the evidence did not support. Finance should agree the contribution definition and relevant variable costs before the team uses the result to allocate spending.

Separate revenue return from profit return

A simple break-even media ROAS can be calculated as one divided by contribution-margin fraction when media is the only remaining cost and revenue is incremental. With a 40% contribution margin before media, the threshold would be 2.5 under those assumptions. Add production or servicing costs and the threshold changes. ROI vs ROAS should therefore appear beside the commercial model, not in isolation from it. A business with high returns or discounts needs net revenue and an appropriate margin. A subscription business also needs a cohort and horizon before future customer value can be used responsibly. Marketing mix modelling is explained in a separate guide.

Talk it through

Make the return calculation legible

Bring your revenue basis, contribution margin and included campaign costs. We can discuss whether the reported return describes revenue or profit and shape a brief that connects the creative task with the evidence your team needs. The scope, costs and required specialist support will be agreed before execution.

Review my measurement brief

Use incremental ROAS for the additional spend question

Incremental ROAS divides incremental revenue by the relevant added advertising spend. It requires an estimate of additional revenue, not merely a different attribution label. A credible experiment or justified modelling approach can support that estimate, with uncertainty. 2 If a study withdraws spend, document the sign convention and comparison carefully. For expansion decisions, marginal response and operational capacity matter too. Historical average returns do not necessarily describe the next rupee. Keep the period and intervention visible, and avoid using a point estimate from one test as a permanent channel target. If that is your next question, read our guide to marketing incrementality.

Make the report legible to finance

Show the revenue basis, margin basis, campaign costs and credit method on the same page. Separate measured transactions from estimated incremental outcomes. Include timing: acquisition happens now, while some customer contribution may arrive later. Do not silently replace current realised contribution with optimistic future lifetime value. Quiamo can help structure a campaign scorecard and work with your finance definitions before creative and media decisions are finalised. The output should let a reader reproduce the calculation and understand what kind of claim is being made, including what costs or effects remain outside the chosen view. For the wider picture, see our guide to CAC vs CPA.

Choose a ratio that supports the next decision

An operational ROAS target may be useful for daily platform management, while a total investment view belongs in campaign review. A board decision about additional budget needs the best available incremental commercial evidence. Keep these views connected but separate. Review whether targets reward the behaviour you actually want. A very high acquisition-cost constraint can discourage reaching new buyers if cheap existing demand dominates the report. Conversely, a vague lifetime-value argument can excuse poor current economics. Put the business objective first, agree the cost and outcome definitions, and judge the ratio in that context.

Put the measurement plan into practice

Put the formula in the report as editable text and include a small reconciliation table that a finance colleague can reproduce. Show revenue, product contribution, media, production and other included costs separately. If the dashboard uses a narrower daily metric, explain how it connects to the campaign review. Record the date of the financial extract because returns and cancellations can alter later totals. For comparisons over time, preserve the same cost basis or clearly describe the change. An improved ratio caused by excluding fees should not be presented as improved campaign performance. Legibility makes the metric more useful even when the resulting return is less flattering. For agency reporting, make the media fee and production fee visible. A client should not have to reverse-engineer the denominator from an invoice to understand its return.

Before the campaign goes live

Use this checklist to organise evidence about whether the reported return describes revenue or profit. Assign owners to the tasks and keep the supporting evidence with the campaign record.

  • Agree the revenue and contribution definitions with finance.
  • List the costs included and excluded from each ratio.
  • State the attribution or causal estimation basis.
  • Reconcile refunds, cancellations and the observation window.
  • Separate realised contribution from forecast customer value.
  • Use incremental economics for additional investment decisions where evidence permits.

Questions people ask

Is a ROAS of four good?

Not without margin, cost and attribution context. A ratio can exceed a platform target while missing the business’s profit requirement. Calculate the appropriate break-even assumptions.

Are ROI and ROMI standardised everywhere?

No. Reporting conventions vary. Define the numerator, denominator, scope and period explicitly so readers can reproduce the calculation and compare it fairly.

Can we use lifetime value in the numerator?

Only with a clear cohort, horizon, contribution basis and justified assumptions. Show forecast value separately from realised value and test sensitivity to retention estimates.

Bring the measurement question into the brief

A return ratio should be easy to reproduce and hard to misinterpret. ROI vs ROAS becomes useful when revenue, contribution, costs and causal evidence are clearly labelled. Bring Quiamo the existing scorecard and the investment decision it needs to support. We can help shape a campaign review that finance and marketing can read together. The figure may become less impressive once costs and uncertainty are included, but it will become a better basis for deciding what the business should fund next.
