RACE: Measuring Reach, Act, Convert and Engage

Define lifecycle events and a stage-based measurement plan. Read the framework, measurement limits, worked example and questions to settle before commissioning the work.

A visit is only the beginning

The RACE framework helps a marketing team ask what happens after someone notices the business. Reach can look healthy while the website leaves buyers confused. Conversion can look impressive while new customers leave after the first order. RACE separates these jobs so that the report explains the customer lifecycle, rather than putting every available number on one screen and calling it performance.

Understand Reach Act Convert and Engage

Smart Insights describes RACE as Reach, Act, Convert and Engage, with planning preceding the lifecycle stages.1 Reach concerns contact with potential audiences. Act concerns meaningful interactions before the main conversion. Convert concerns the defined commercial action. Engage concerns continuing relationships, retention and advocacy. The distinction between Act and Convert is particularly helpful when a buyer must research, evaluate and obtain approval before purchasing.

The framework is a way to organise planning and measurement. It does not prove that every buyer follows a neat sequence or that a recorded interaction caused a purchase. Someone may encounter a brand offline, visit anonymously and return through a different channel. A buying group may involve several people whose actions cannot be stitched into one reliable personal journey. Keep those limitations visible when you build the scorecard. Our guide to SOSTAC framework covers the next question.

Give Reach a defined audience

Reach measures are useful when the audience is relevant and the counting method is clear. An impression is a delivery record, not proof that someone paid attention. Unique reach is an estimate or count within the measurement system, with limits on deduplication across platforms. Report the geography, campaign period and target audience. A national total can hide the fact that the business serves only a few locations.

Connect reach to the intended market. For an equipment supplier, broad consumer exposure may contribute little to a specialist application launch. For a widely available consumer product, a narrow lead list may miss future buyers. The right question is whether the planned audience was reached at a sensible cost and with recognisable communication. Avoid letting easily available platform numbers define the strategy by default.

Choose an Act event that means something

Act should represent a useful step toward the buyer’s task. A technical specification download, a completed suitability checker or a request for a sample can matter more than a page view. Define the event precisely. If downloads are available without identity, report downloads rather than pretending to know the number of qualified accounts involved.

In the RACE framework, Act provides a diagnostic bridge between exposure and conversion. It can reveal whether people find the next step useful. It can also become a vanity layer if every scroll and click is celebrated. Select a few events with a plausible relationship to the buying process, examine their later outcomes and retain room for buyers who prefer a phone call or distributor conversation. The website should help them, too. If that is your next question, read our guide to customer journey mapping.

Keep conversion definitions consistent

Choose the conversion that matches the business and distinguish earlier steps from completed sales. A submitted form, accepted opportunity and paid order are different events. Write the eligibility criteria and deduplication rule next to the metric so the dashboard cannot quietly change its meaning.

  • For a purchase conversion rate, specify completed eligible purchases divided by the chosen eligible visitor or session base during the same defined window.
  • For an enquiry conversion, count valid deduplicated requests and disclose qualification rules separately. Invalid submissions should not inflate the numerator.
  • For sales progression, follow an acquired enquiry cohort to accepted opportunities and closed orders, allowing enough time for the normal sales cycle.
  • For repeat purchase, define the starting customer group and the purchase interval appropriate to the category before comparing cohort outcomes.
  • For subscription retention, use billing records and a fixed existing-customer cohort. State whether the measure concerns customers or recurring revenue.

Find the missing stage in your lifecycle report

Share the lifecycle stages, conversion definitions and the point where the team loses visibility. We can discuss a scorecard and content brief that reflect the actual customer experience.

Review our lifecycle

Engage includes the experience after purchase

For a repeat-purchase business, examine eligible customer cohorts, repeat purchase and time between orders. For a subscription business, examine customer and revenue retention with clear period definitions. For B2B, continuing engagement may include successful onboarding, documentation use, product adoption and renewal. A newsletter open is a communication signal; it is not evidence that the relationship is healthy.

Include safeguards. More promotional messages can increase short-term sales while causing unsubscribes, complaints or margin erosion. A good Engage scorecard shows the customer experience and economics alongside response. Talk to service colleagues about recurring problems. The marketing team may discover that the most useful retention content is a straightforward explanation of how to use or maintain the product, rather than another discount.

Review stage relationships rather than isolated totals. Healthy Reach with weak Act may suggest poor audience fit or a confusing next step. Healthy Act with weak Convert may indicate price, qualification, availability or sales handling problems. Strong conversion with weak retention deserves an examination of the delivered experience. These are starting hypotheses, not automatic diagnoses.

Choose one investigation and one accountable owner. Check the data before commissioning new creative work. If event definitions changed, annotate the report and avoid comparing incompatible periods. If an experiment is needed, state the outcome and test design separately. RACE makes the lifecycle legible; it should not become a substitute for asking customers what happened or for establishing causal effects when that is the decision at stake. RFM analysis is explained in a separate guide.

Questions people ask

Is Act the same as conversion?

Act usually captures useful interactions before the main conversion. Define both for your business. A demo request can be an Act event when the commercial conversion is a closed order, but report that distinction consistently.

Can we combine reach across advertising platforms?

Only with a method that deals with audience duplication and differing measurement systems. Adding platform reach totals can double-count people. State the limits of the cross-channel figure.

Does RACE work for B2B?

Yes, if the events reflect evaluation, procurement and the sales cycle. Use account or opportunity measures where appropriate, and allow enough time for the acquired cohort to produce outcomes.

Discuss the work your team needs next

Bring your lifecycle report to Quiamo with the event definitions attached, including what happens after the first conversion. A RACE framework review can identify the missing questions and connect the page, campaign and retention work to a coherent customer experience. Start with the stage that creates uncertainty for your team, so the engagement addresses a real decision rather than adding another layer of reporting.
