The question this article answers
The ad was viewed. Did anybody remember the brand, understand the message or consider the offer differently? Brand lift measurement addresses those questions through a defined comparison. It gives a campaign a more useful evaluation than views alone, but the design matters as much as the percentage. A credible report explains who was compared, what they were asked, how uncertainty was handled and which effects the study can actually support.
Choose the outcome before the film is finished
A campaign may aim to improve ad recall, awareness, association, consideration or another stated perception. Choose the primary outcome before launch and ensure the question measures it. Asking whether someone saw an ad does not establish that they understood its claim. Asking whether they would consider a brand does not establish an eventual purchase.
Keep the questionnaire short enough to produce thoughtful answers. Avoid leading language that repeats the desired campaign conclusion. Include an appropriate competitive context and consistent response options. A creative brief should tell the production team what the audience should understand, so the measurement task is not invented after the work has already run. Use a brand tracking study for ongoing monitoring rather than replacing it with one campaign test.
Exposure is not automatically a valid control

People who happened to see the campaign may differ from people who did not. They can have different interests, locations, buying behaviour or platform usage. A simple comparison of those groups can therefore contain selection bias. A study designed around a suitable randomised opportunity to receive advertising can support a stronger causal interpretation.
Platform lift studies offer defined methods and eligibility conditions.1 Read their documentation rather than assuming every product labelled lift uses the same design. A broader independent survey can serve a different purpose, particularly for mixed online and offline campaigns. State whether the result comes from an experiment, an observational comparison or a before-and-after study. Read marketing incrementality for the broader problem of causal comparisons.
Absolute and relative lift are different
If the positive response rate is 20% in the comparison group and 25% in the treatment group, the absolute difference is five percentage points. Relative lift is 5/20, or 25%. Both describe the same result, but the larger-looking number must not be presented without its baseline.1
For brand lift measurement, keep the response rates beside the calculated lift. Show the relevant uncertainty interval and sample details. A small or inconclusive estimate should not be recast as proof that the creative failed. The study may have insufficient power, weak delivery, a short fieldwork window or a measure poorly matched to the objective. Compare study roles in our guide to attribution vs incrementality.
Connect the finding to a creative decision

If viewers recall the film but cannot identify its advertiser, review branding and attribution. If they identify the advertiser but misunderstand the offer, review the message and proof. If comprehension is clear but consideration does not move, examine whether the audience is relevant and whether the offer genuinely addresses a buying situation.
Some failures belong outside production. Availability, price, trust or category constraints may limit response. Use the findings to ask better questions rather than diagnosing every weak result as a need for a louder opening. A well-run study can reveal that the creative did what it was asked to do while the original objective was poorly chosen.
Questions to settle with the research partner
Ask who is assigned to each group and how that assignment relates to the opportunity to receive advertising. Ask what happens when people encounter the campaign elsewhere, and whether overlapping activity can affect the comparison. These questions belong in planning, not in a footnote discovered after the report arrives.
Agree the survey window and the precise creative material under evaluation. A study of one platform’s campaign does not automatically represent a newspaper insertion or the entire integrated campaign. If several assets run together, clarify whether the design can separate their effects. Avoid demanding a creative-by-creative conclusion from a study that was designed only to assess the combined activity.
Discuss detectable effect sizes, uncertainty and cost before committing. A study can be technically valid but too small to resolve the difference management cares about. The partner should explain that trade-off in language the team can use. It is better to choose a modest clear question than commission a broad study that cannot support its promised conclusions.
Decide the reporting rules in advance. Preserve inconclusive results, record deviations from the plan and report the chosen primary measure. Selecting whichever outcome improved most after fieldwork can make an exploratory result look stronger than it is. A good brief protects the integrity of the conclusion even when the findings are less flattering than hoped.
Agree the lift question before the campaign runs
Share the creative objective, audience and proposed media plan. We will discuss a campaign evaluation brief that separates perception from purchase.
Worked example using fictional numbers
Illustrative example only: a properly designed fictional experiment obtains 1,000 eligible responses in each group. Two hundred comparison respondents and 250 treatment respondents select the stated consideration response. The rates are 20% and 25%, giving five points absolute lift and 25% relative lift. The report still includes design-appropriate uncertainty rather than relying on this arithmetic alone. It does not claim 50 additional buyers or a specific amount of revenue. The figures show calculation, not a power recommendation or an actual Quiamo campaign result.
Putting the evidence to work
Agree the study before media is booked. Check whether the proposed design can detect a commercially meaningful change at the available scale. Define exclusions, overlapping campaigns, question order and the reporting window. Keep the creative and exposure records so the measured work can be identified accurately later.\ \ Quiamo can connect campaign objectives, production decisions and an appropriate evaluation brief. The working output should state the primary measure, the study partner or platform method, the comparison limitations and the decisions to take after results arrive. If the result is uncertain, specify what further evidence would help rather than presenting ambiguity as success. Explore how Quiamo approaches brand strategy and communication before defining the scope.
Questions people ask
Does brand lift mean sales lift?
No. A study of awareness, recall or consideration measures those survey outcomes. They may be commercially relevant, but additional sales require evidence on purchasing or another business outcome. Keep perception and conversion findings separate so stakeholders understand which claim each study supports.
Can we run a survey only after the campaign?
Yes, depending on the design. A post-campaign experiment can compare appropriately assigned groups. A survey of people who self-report exposure is more limited because exposure may be associated with other differences. The timing alone does not determine validity; the group construction and question task matter.
What does no detectable lift mean?
It means the study did not establish the effect at its stated level of certainty under that design. It does not automatically establish zero effect. Inspect uncertainty, sample, delivery and the match between question and objective. Decide whether further testing is worthwhile in relation to the business decision and budget.
Where to go next
Plan brand lift measurement while the campaign can still be shaped. Bring Quiamo the audience, creative objective and media proposal. We can help define a question worth testing and a production brief that gives the brand a clear, measurable role in the work. Contact Quiamo to discuss the brief.

Test what the campaign was meant to change
If the creative is ready, share the primary objective and proposed study method. We can discuss whether the audience, question and comparison can evaluate that objective.
